Are you stressed out at work? And after work? And before work?

Because every where you turn, work seems to be taking over your life?

Would you say you have a good work/life balance right now-or are you more likely to say,

"Balance? Ha! What balance?"

Victim
How many of your employees, from the rank-and-file up through management, feel the same way?
It's easy to dismiss workplace stress and say employees should be happy to have a job at all these days, because everyone is doing more with less. But when employees are fed up, overworked, beaten down, and just plain tired, your company will take a hit. A big one. Where it hurts. In the corporate wallet.

Back_to_back

Have you ever thought about what stress is costing you?

Consider this: Almost 1 in 5 workers have quit a job because of job stress. Nearly 1 in 4 have been driven to tears because of job stress.

Can you afford that kind of turnover in your organization? And look at these numbers...

  • In a 1999 survey, NIOSH cites that nearly HALF (40%) of workers reported their job was very or extremely stressful
  • 25% of workers view their jobs as the number one stressor in their lives
  • A whopping 80% of workers feel stress on the job, nearly half say they need help in learning how to manage stress, and 42% say their coworkers need such help
  • Three-fourths of employees believe they have more on-the-job stress than a generation ago

Here's a scary thought: 14% of respondents in a 2000 Gallup poll said they felt like striking a coworker in the past year, but didn't. That's a lot of pent-up frustration and stress. Here are some more statistics...

  • 42% report that yelling and other verbal abuse are common where they work
  • 29% had actually yelled at coworkers because of workplace stress
  • Job stress is more strongly associated with health problems than financial or family problems
  • Health care expenditures are nearly 50% higher for workers who report high levels of stress

Sort of makes you feel like you're sitting on a fault line: The pressure is building, and it could blow at any minute.

What do all these numbers mean?

All these data, studies, and statistics are saying that work/life balance is probably a bigger problem than you realize...

...and that without addressing it, you're either paying for stress in unintended consequences (higher turnover, high absenteeism, higher healthcare costs)...

...or you're a headline waiting to happen ("Dozens were injured at a local business today, when a disgruntled employee took out his stress on coworkers, story at 11)."

Why getting a grip on work/life balance is a

sure-thing, cannot-lose investment.

If the health risks of stress don't have you convinced about the importance of a good work/life balance, maybe some dollars-and-cents financial talk will convince you.

There's a well-known study, one of the first of its kind, that demonstrated that companies make on average a 3-to-1 ROI from their wellness programs. And the results have been replicated time and time again.

Can you imagine any other investment that will pay you back three times over, with relatively little cash upfront? Some of it won't cost you a dime to implement, it just takes a few adjustments in what you do for employees.

In other words, helping employees live healthier lives and maintain a healthy work/life balance actually pays off for your company in less absenteeism, better engagement and productivity, fewer injuries... the list goes on and on.

You really can't lose. Either way, you get a better, more focused staff.

And up until now, companies who wanted to re-engage their employees and help them find a healthier work/life balance have had to rely on pieces of information, a webinar here, an article there, a book somewhere in between.

That's why speaker, trainer, and work/life balance expert Pamela Cournoyer created Work/Life Balance Training Camp. Work/Life Balance Training Camp gives busy execs and HR managers an all-inclusive two-day training, where in one comprehensive class they can learn what causes problems with work/life balance to begin with, and how to address those problems.

  • The biggest triggers for stress, and how we often pull the triggers ourselves
  • The best strategies for neutralizing stress, separating the psychobabble from techniques that actually work
  • How Facebook can help you create better relationships in the office, without ever touching a computer
  • Changing the attitudes that make stress worse (most people aren't even aware of them!)
  • The secret to setting better priorities and boundaries so you can have real quality time at home and at the office
  • What's the stress load on your managers? How to assess them quickly, and 7 simple steps to decrease that load and build morale
  • Rolling out work/life balance programs throughout your company and getting maximum participation

Stress is more dangerous than smoking.

Whether you're aware of it or not, the stress of having a poor work/life balance is taking its physical toll on you, and your employees. Consider these alarming statistics about the risks of not having a good work/life balance:

  • 10% of people who are married or living with children under 18 experience severe work-family conflict and 25% experience moderate levels of conflict, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
  • Chronic stress is known to cause illness, from stomach aches to depression to high blood pressure and heart disease, which can ultimately kill you.
  • A 20-year study found that stress is a more dangerous risk factor for cancer and heart disease than either cigarette smoking or high-cholesterol foods.

That's right. Stress could be more dangerous to your health than smoking-which you are also more likely to do if you're stressed.

It's a catch-22. You're stressed, so you make bad choices, like smoking or drinking heavily or eating too much take-out because you don't have time to cook. But then those choices affect your health too. And before you know it, you're on a merry-go-round of bad decisions influenced and made worse by stress.

When you add it all up, what's stress costing your company in healthcare and employee sick time?

What are you waiting for?

Your new, more enjoyable life is waiting for you.

It's time to take action, before another employee calls in "sick," your employee turnover rates jump another notch, or, even worse, someone does something violent and dangerous on your property, something the company could be held liable for.

Work/Life Balance Training Camp is a remarkable two-day event, if you're looking for practical answers for many different situations, in one place.

Whether you're taking one for the team or just have an extremely demanding job, does that really mean you and your employees have to sacrifice your personal lives all together?

Or, maybe you or some of your managers are work-a-holics. Do you have trouble putting work aside when it's time to spend time with family and friends?

Because it's not just the stress of working too much. What are you missing in your life while you're working? Time with friends? Your child's first words? A wedding? A favorite hobby? Are your personal relationships suffering from too much work?
